Supermarket shopping can sometimes feel overwhelming, especially when the mission is to make healthier choices for you and your family. So here are three tips to help you navigate the aisles!
Stick to the Perimeter
The bulk of your shopping should be from the perimeter of the supermarket. Here, you’ll find fresh produce, meat, fish and chilled/frozen goods. When filling your trolley, look for local produce whenever possible. It’s not only an indicator of what is in season but is more affordable and tastier than its imported produce.
Tip: If organic isn’t an option, give it a wash in a mixture of water and apple cider vinegar before storing.
Navigating the Centre Aisles
The centre aisles can be a maze of temptation filled with clever marketing, colourful packaging, and convenient options; however be wary, these products are frequently filled with additives, preservatives, and ingredients that read more like a science experiment than a recipe.
Don’t be fooled by health food isles and gluten-free products, just because something is marketed as a health food doesn’t mean that you don’t need to check the ingredients.
That’s not to say avoid these aisles, as they also are home to many nutrient-dense staples like beans and legumes, olive oil, nuts, and seeds. Look for products with minimal ingredients and opt for items that are as close to their natural state as possible.
Plan, Prepare, Succeed
Before you shop, it’s so important to have a plan in place. Create a weekly menu and organise your shopping list by aisles, and stick to it. This approach not only streamlines your shopping experience but also keeps you focused on your nutritional goals.
