How To Cook Perfect Rice Every Time

Cooking rice seems like a straightforward task, but achieving that fluffy, perfectly cooked rice every time can be harder than we think. 

Here are our go-to methods for cooking white, brown and black rice.

How to Cook White Rice (Basmati and Jasmine) – Absorption Method 

Rice Measurement to Water Ratio 1:1 ½ 

1 cup rice = 1 ½ cups water

1 ½ cups rice = 2 cups water

2 cups rice = 3 cups water

  1. In a saucepan, combine water, rice, and salt.
  2. Place it on medium-high heat and bring to a simmer without the lid.
  3. Once a white foam appears on the surface, cover with a lid, reduce the heat to medium-low, and let it cook for 12 minutes.
  4. Remove the saucepan from the stove and let it rest, covered, for 10 minutes.

Note: Overflow during cooking may be due to a lid that doesn’t fit correctly, too much heat, or a too-small saucepan.

How to Cook Brown and Black Rice – Boiling Method

Rice Measurement to Water Ratio 1:1 ½ 

½ cup rice = 3 cups water

1 cup rice = 6 cups water

1 ½ cups rice = 9 cups water

2 cups rice = 12 cups water

  1. Bring a pot of water to a rolling boil.
  2. Rinse the rice under running water in a sieve to remove excess starch.
  3. Add the rice to the boiling water.
  4. Boil uncovered for 30 minutes.
  5. Drain off the remaining cooking water and return the rice to the pot. Cover the pot and let the rice rest, off the heat, for 10 minutes.
