In the Kitchen with Krissy, Co-Founder of Modeletto

I’m Krissy, co-founder of Modeletto (I hate intros so you’ll have to read on to find out more hehe).

Where does your inspiration come from for all your amazing pottery pieces?

For the colours we use I get a lot of inspiration from the buildings in Europe, particularly in Italy where my family’s heritage is from. For the designs of bowls and vases – a lot of them are just me playing around on the wheel. Pottery has been around for centuries so these days nothing is really original, but I like to draw a rough shape I want then try and make it. Sometimes it works out and other times it ends up in the recycle bucket but that’s the great thing with clay as it’s such a sustainable product from the earth that you can reuse time and time again.

For the Assortment salad bowl, we joined forces to create the ideal vessel to showcase a delicious salad. It had to be spacious enough to hold all the ingredients, with ample room for tossing, yet not too deep. I then taught my mum (business partner) how to make them and now she’s making them all in Christchurch.

What’s your food philosophy?

I eat really healthily and mainly to fuel my body. I love the way that healthy food tastes and makes me feel. I’m super busy with work so I focus on things that are really easy to make but very nutrient dense so that I have enough fuel to maintain my focus and motivation. I’m pretty fussy with food lol, I don’t like red meat and gluten upsets me so Assortment is a god send for always giving alternatives.

What does a day on your plate look like?

I used to eat toast with butter every morning for breakfast but I’m trying to reduce my dairy intake at the moment for hormone regulation, so I’m enjoying switching it up with a breaky smoothie bowl that contains protein powder, almond milk, blueberries, gluten free wheat bix, tahini and cinnamon topped with seeds for the crunch. Sounds weird I know but it keeps me full for ages. I’m trying to cut down on my caffeine intake but I usually have 2 with almond or oat milk and then a few cups of tea and a hot choco before bed- yes this gal loves a hot drink haha. For lunch I’ll make a salad or have leftovers and for dinner it’s assortment which is so easy and always so yum. It makes cooking for a partner so easy too especially for fussy old me!

Being a busy entrepreneur, what’s your go-to easy mid-week meal?

Any one of assortments roast veggie salads and fish tacos is on the menu every week in my household.

These are my top salad picks!

What’s always in your pantry or fridge?

Tahini, Cauliflower, hot chocolate lol, lots of seeds and nuts.

Death row meal – starter, main and dessert

Starter – ceviche or corn chips and guac

Main – would be pan fried fish with an assortment salad no joke lol.

Dessert – I never have dessert because I always stuff myself on starters and the main lol but I love to steal a spoonful of someone else’s! I do have a hot choco every night though so that’s my dessert and definitely the last thing.’

Most hated food?‍

Red meat or oysters

What fills up your cup?

Family, friends, cooking, my customers telling me how much they loved finding a new hobby or giving someone an experience – it’s the best feeling.

How do you relax?

Cuddles with my partner, pottery, yoga and walking.

Pet peeve?

Waiting or wasting time.

Two things people don’t know about you?

I hate sitting still, I have to be constantly doing something 😆

I’ve had like 5 careers but this one is the best!
