Tacos 101

Building the perfect taco is all about layering flavours and textures to create a balanced and delicious combination!

The five key components of a great tasting taco:

  1. Tortillas
  2. Protein
  3. Fresh
  4. Creamy
  5. Toppings

Tacos are one of our favourite dishes to make when entertaining or having family around for dinner as everyone can get involved and build their own taco. It’s also perfect for fussy eaters or when people have dietary restrictions as it’s easy to pick and choose what you want.

THE FIVE KEY COMPONENTS:

Tortilla

Start with a tortilla of your choice, flour or corn tortilla. Corn tortillas have a more traditional and authentic flavour, while flour tortillas tend to be softer and more pliable. For a lighter option, you could also use a lettuce cup.

We always like to warm tortillas before serving to make them more pliable. Heating them over a flame or grill adds a delicious smokey taste that we love!

Protein

The protein filling is a key component of tacos and can provide a lot of flavour to the taco.

For example:

  • Seasoned mince
  • Grilled chicken,
  • Fish, pan fried or crumbed
  • Slow-cooked pork or beef,
  • Beans
  • Grilled veggies
  • Jackfruit

Something fresh

Adding something fresh is key to balancing out the rich flavours of the protein. You can add some simple

For example:

  • Shredded lettuce
  • Slaw
  • Tomato salsa
  • Salsa verde

Something creamy

Tacos always need something creamy to balance out the acidity of the other fillings.

For example:

  • Guacamole
  • Sour cream
  • Sriracha mayo
  • Coriander and lime crema
  • Feta cheese

Toppings

Finish off your taco with some final touches.

For example:

  • Fresh coriander
  • Squeeze of lime juice
  • Pickled onions
  • Jalapeños
  • Charred corn

Assembly

Start by placing the protein in the tortilla as the base layer. Add your fresh and creamy elements, distributing them evenly then top with your toppings – this helps to ensure that each bite contains a balanced mix of flavours.

The best thing about tacos is their versatility, so feel free to experiment with different ingredients, flavours, and combinations!
