Are you feeling pressured, overwhelmed, stressed? You’re not alone.
These are common feelings that arise during the silly season. It’s supposed to be the most wonderful time of the year, yet so many of us feel swamped by to-do lists, social pressures, comparisons, and expectations. As the year wraps up, it is also a very reflective and nostalgic period. With so many different emotions and events going on, it’s no wonder we can all feel a little imbalanced.
3 tips to keep your cool this silly season
Your breath is an incredibly powerful tool that provides access to your nervous system. You can either up-regulate (through very fast breathing) or down-regulate (through long slow breathing) nervous system activity. If you feel like you are operating in fight or flight mode throughout the silly season, dedicate a few minutes of your day to some mindful breaths and you will be able to inject some calm into the chaos.

30 minutes of exercise a day not only benefits your physical health but also has incredible benefits for mental your health. Walking is a gentle yet effective way to get you out of your head and into your body. If you feel yourself getting caught in stressful thought loops, take yourself outside and move your legs for 30 minutes. It’s amazing how it can change your state.
Walking is also a great thing to do after a meal to aid in digestion and lower blood sugar levels so you might want to go out for a wander after you’ve indulged in the Christmas ham.
Gratitude is a mindset we can all adopt. There will always be something to be thankful for, and it’s a perspective shift that can totally alter your mood. Complaining can cause temporary relief but it doesn’t promote growth or happiness. Whether you are grateful for the sun on your skin, the smile of a stranger, or the roof over your head, get out a journal and start writing down a list of things that come to mind. Ask yourself; What went well today? What did I learn from this experience? Who do I appreciate having in my life? What am I looking forward to?
Count your blessings and they will multiply!
